The 2026 session is off to a fantastic start, and I’m energized by the opportunity to work alongside such a talented and dedicated group of colleagues. Together, we’re focused on making real, positive progress for Utah and the communities we’re proud to serve.
Week 2 Legislative Update
I've had some chatter on a couple of key legislative bills I am running this session. Here's the rundown:
H.B. 52 Tribal Endorsement of Utah Driver License Amendments:This bill allows Utah driver license and ID applicants to voluntarily add a "Native American" notation to their card if they are an enrolled member of a federally recognized Indian tribe.
H.B. 209 Voting Amendments:This bill updates Utah's election laws by creating a new process to verify U.S. citizenship for voting and establishing a two-track ballot system for elections after November 1, 2026.
H.B. 101 Firearm Background Check Amendments:This bill streamlines firearm transfer requirements by reducing duplicative background checks. It exempts an individual from an additional background check for the sale or transfer of a firearm regulated under the National Firearms Act if the federal approval for that transfer is within the previous 30 days. It also clarifies that a Federal Firearms Licensee is not required to undergo a criminal background check when a firearm is transferred to the licensee.
