The 2026 General Legislative Session Week 6

2026 Legislative Update: Week Six

Hello House District 52!

We are officially finished with week 6 of this year's Legislative Session, and only have one more week to go. I’m energized and grateful to be be working alongside such a talented, dedicated group of colleagues. It’s an honor to represent House District 52, and every day we’re focused on making real, positive progress for Utah and the communities we’re proud to serve.

This Week on the Hill:

We have wrapped up the second-to-last week of the 2026 Legislative session and are now in the home stretch. I've spent long hours on the floor each day working to make sure we get important legislation across the finish line.
  • My bills HB52, HB101, and HB246 have all passed the Legislature and are headed to the Governor for his signature.
Week 6 Legislative Update

I've had some chatter on a couple of key legislative bills I am running this session. Here's the rundown:

  • H.B. 52 Tribal Endorsement of Utah Driver License Amendments: This bill allows Utah driver license and ID applicants to voluntarily add a Federally Recognized Tribal Member notation to their card if they are an enrolled member of a federally recognized Indian tribe. The bill is now on the Governor's desk awaiting his signature.
  • H.B. 209 Voting Amendments: This bill updates Utah's election laws by creating a new process to verify U.S. citizenship for voting and establishing a two-track ballot system for elections. This bill has passed the House and is also on the Senate third reading calendar.
  • H.B. 101 Firearm Background Check Amendments:  This bill streamlines firearm transfer requirements by reducing duplicative background checks. It exempts an individual from an additional background check for the sale or transfer of a firearm regulated under the National Firearms Act if the federal approval for that transfer is within the previous 30 days. It also clarifies that a Federal Firearms Licensee is not required to undergo a criminal background check when a firearm is transferred to the licensee. The bill is now on the Governor's desk awaiting his signature.
As always, please feel free to reach out to me or my intern, Ian, with any questions or comments you have.

Thank you and have a great week,

Cory Maloy
