2021 Legislative Update: Week 1

The 2021 Legislative Session is underway. This Session will be unlike any other. We have a lot of work to do to ensure our state recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the next few weeks, I will be updating you on what I am working on and the legislative session's highlights.

Below you will find information about the first week of the legislative session and a few helpful links. If you have any questions, please reach out.

Thank you,
Representative Cory Maloy
House District 6

Working To Protect and Keep Families Connected

One of the things I am working on during this session is to make sure we are able to connect with loved ones and keep both our emotional, mental, and physical health in mind.

In a recent article about my work, I was quoted saying, “Certainly we are in a pandemic, and we all need to do our part to keep each other safe, but there are people going months and months without contact. It is a major detriment to their well-being.” To read this article and about what I am doing, click here.

Bill Highlight

The work we do in the legislature isn't always exciting. However, it is important. Those of us that represent our constituents on a more local level deal with more local issues. Through the next few weeks, I will highlight a bill I am working to pass into law. This week I am highlighting H.B. 143. This bill:
  • Prohibits the suspension of an individual's driver's license by the Driver License Division based solely on the individual's failure to pay certain fines.
  • Prohibits a court from ordering a driver license suspension or revocation under certain circumstances

Policy Priorities

We have a lot of work to do over the forty-five-day session. A few of our policy priorities are:
  • Broaden Economic Success
2020 brought a host of economic challenges, but Utah was well prepared to meet them. Allocating taxpayer funds in a way that maximizes each dollar, prepares us for the next crisis, and broadens economic success to each corner of the state will be critical to Utah’s continuing economic rebound and future prosperity.
  • Build a Connected Future
Continued investment in transportation, recreation, and technology infrastructure projects will provide the foundation for Utah’s long-term prosperity and quality of life.
  • Extend Opportunity to All
Efforts to improve access to healthcare, housing, and education will open the door of opportunity to everyone in the state. Utah can only reach its full potential when all Utahns can make the most of their individual talents.
  • Balance Emergency Power
Finally, after facing a global pandemic for almost a year, it is apparent that we must reassess how we respond to emergencies to allow for swift action, but never at the expense of the will of the people.
